Delayed Gratification - Is this term still valid anymore??? There is only 20 searches in wordtracker for Delayed Gratification. In google, there's measly 1 million plus competing pages. And the site that ranked No1 is google is no more existing. Belwo is what I got from the cached page.
"How are you at delaying gratification -- you know, putting off pleasure until your work is finished? Children who can delay gratification--wait for their reward--will be more successful than their peers. Psychologists at Stanford University put pre-school children alone in a room with a marshmallow. The children were told that they could either eat the one marshmallow in front of them or wait, and receive two marshmallows to eat. One-third of the children were able to wait the full 15-20 minutes for the second marshmallow. The researchers followed up with the students 14 years later. The students who were able to wait the full 15-20 minutes scored higher on their SAT tests and were more emotionally stable than their peers.
Clearly, we need to know how to delay gratification. Without that skill, most of us would sit in bed all day watching television, reading trashy magazines, and feasting on all things chocolate. (Okay, I would do that. You might have other vices.) Still, most of my clients and colleagues are pretty good at delaying gratification. Their problem? Indulging in a little "immediate gratification."
When I speak, I meet many people who have great passions that they are waiting to get around to doing. One woman I met had always dreamed of living by the ocean. Unfortunately, her husband hated the water and so she hadn't been to the ocean in twenty years. A man I met loved his children and wanted to spend more time with them. He said, "I always think I will get to them when the work is done, but it is never done." I've always wanted to write a novel. But, my family needs to eat. No one will pay me to write a story -- yet. But, if I never write that novel, they never will pay me to create stories.
Most of us have difficulty taking time out of the middle of our day to do what we love. Instead, we work ourselves crazy. When we do come home, we are so exhausted by our work that we only have energy for mindless pleasures: endless television and empty calories.
Your in-box is always going to be full. The more you do and the better you do it, the higher the pile of work will be. Stop delaying and denying what you are passionate about. Take a break and do what YOU need to do. For my part, I've started that novel. I try to write a page each day. I figure that in a year, I will at least have something "longish enough" to edit!
So here's my professional advice for you this month: Get a little pleasure and joy in your life. Spend time with a friend. Go sailing. Volunteer. DO whatever joyful thing it is that you've been delaying. NOW! Practice a little immediate gratification!"
